I've been hearing all kindsa skinny on various business going under, even in our prosperous leetle town. So I went online to see what I could find. Here it is, from the Independent. It's over a month old.

Anyone else know of any other places that could go into any of the categories on this list?

  • Hey I visited SB recently and I was shocked, *shocked*! to find that the Italian-Greek deli and Harry's were closed! When did they pull up stakes? Did either reopen anywhere?
    • Italian greek deli went not too long ago, my understanding is they are now reinvested as an Italian restaurant, which name I forget but already had a reputation of excellence almost before they opened.....

Harry's is mentioned in that article above.... that is definitely strange.
      • Harry's Plaza Cafe officially closed? Man that's sad. It seems so many landlords would rather raise take a tax break then keep rents reasonable enough for a business that's been there for decades to stay IN business. There seems to be no business loyalty at all.
I realize a lot of landlords have their own costs to pay, but still. I know someone who works in a building for a company in SB that only uses the upper floor, and they pay $80,000 a month for rent! Good grief!

Really, in my OPINION Santa Barbara is shooting itself in the foot with the high rents and real estate. Raising the rents/costs so much forces more people to move out then move in, unless they're practically celebrity-rich, or at least well off enough that a million dollars for a home is pocket change. I moved in 2000 after spending more then a year looking for a room to rent where I could have my dog (it's not a terribly pet friendly town for renters either) that was less then $1000 a month. And that was almost ten years ago.

I grew up in SB, and while I think it's still beautiful, the whole tone of the city has changed. It used to have a sort of "small town" feel that made it homey and comfortable. It has become so pretentious (I mean, come on, a Tiffany's and a restaurant with Valet parking in La Cumbre Plaza?!?) and snobby in so may ways, trying to become the new Beverly Hills, and it seems that if someone can't afford to live or be in business in SB, well, that's their tough luck and they can just move out. It's driving a LOT of people out, into Lompoc and other areas. I have several friends in Lompoc (and know of many others), and they all commute to SB for work, having moved out of SB because of the costs.

I like to see these things get as much news as the closing and gloom and doom notices and news everywhere:

AN ORGANIC RESTAURANT Has opened at 1101 State St., called the Hummingbird Cafe!!

hmm, no time to read this now but a complementary article to the independent one above:

Nice linky, Sparks. I found this of some interest:

RESTAURANT STATS: I put together some restaurant stats comparing South Coast openings/closings during the first three months of this year with that of previous years. The stats include restaurants, coffee shops, bakeries and dessert destinations. Though it appears that closings are on the rise, there has been an even larger percentage increase in the openings, which is welcome news.

      2009 Jan-Mar: 15 openings, 14 closings

      2008 Jan-Mar: 9 openings, 11 closings

      2007 Jan-Mar: 10 openings, 7 closings

        Yes.
I am bummed that I realized Hummingbird Cafe is replacing one of my favorite coffee shops, Java Jones.... tho I didn't make it over there much...
But I do remember either a vegan or organic restaurant that used to be on State like 10 yrs ago, and it closed, not terribly popular, I don't know for sure why but I suspect that type of restaurant will do much better now...

and yes, good news, isn't it? So *very* opposite of everything we are hearing about on corporate news. I really wish more were being broadcast on the upside. Not to give false hope, but a more balanced and realistic view of the economy, and if there is some hope, so what? Wasn't that what everyone liked so much about Obama's campaign? Does that only last thru inauguration day? We need it, it's not as if over 90% of us weren't still employed and no one has any business venturing ideas or plans any more..

The main fear that they (whoever they are...) are feeding is that Obama's bailout strategy, though noble in intent, is not going to change the corporate culture of greed and shortsidedness that caused the whole thing to go down in flames. In other words, and in the case of AIG specifically, if no negative repurcussions happen as a result of bad behavior, then Obama has simply rewarded bad behavior. I happen to agree with this view. If you're gonna give billions of dollars to bail out a company whose bosses knowingly fucked up, then at the very least, find out who was responsible, demand their resignation, and install some oversights on big business (24/7) regulators that actually WATCH over the high level dudes. Otherwise, history will repeat itself.

As to the main thrust of your post, I agree wholeheartedly, Miss Sparkle! It's sad and frightening to what degree our culture thrives on negativity, violence and scandal. I wonder what would happen if CNN ran human interest/positive stories all day long, just for one day. I mean, I get that that would indeed leave out quite a bit of real news that happens to be tragic, but at the same time, it does seem that the very opposite is happening with news casting now. It makes one think that most things in the world are tragic. (They're not, are they?...)...

I get what you're saying about the corporate culture and rewarded behavior, completely.

And no, I think that the vast majority of the time, it is amazing how smoothly life flows, and thanks to millions of people being considerate of each other constantly. I'm not saying life is always great, I just happen to also know that it is actually textbook knowledge for aspiring journalists that the most sensationally TRAGIC or awful news perks the most readership. And in the case of the economy, this is literally causing us a downward spiral... we probably deserve it.

Anyway, here's to consumer confidence on the rise!!!!!!!!!!

There is a new bakery of some sort going in on W De La Guerra a few doors down from Elsie's and around the corner from Silvergreens on Chapala (it was Saffron restaurant which was very short lived). Its being remodeled now, not sure of the opening date. I'll update once it opens and I have a chance to check it out.
